Credit unions unite for good — and to celebrate
Each year on the third Thursday of October,
credit unions and their members celebrate International Credit Union Day. This
year, Credit Union Day falls on October 17. The theme for this year’s event,
which will be celebrated by millions around the world, is Credit Unions Unite for Good: A Better Way.
The theme highlights the powerful global
network of credit unions and the advantages that come from sharing challenges,
experiences and solutions in an effort to better serve members.
“Cooperation within the financial cooperative
industry has historically been considered a philosophical principle,” said
Brian Branch, the president and CEO of the World Council of Credit Unions
(WOCCU), “but today there is a market-driven business rationale for finding
co-operative solutions to consumer demand. It is fitting that we celebrate this
year’s International Credit Union Day with this recognition — that credit
unions uniting for the good of our consumers truly is a better way of doing
business.”
International Credit Union Day has
been celebrated since 1948. The day is recognized to reflect upon the credit
union movement's history and to promote its achievements. It is a day to honour
those who have dedicated their lives to the movement, recognize the hard work
of those working in the credit union industry and show members our
appreciation. The ultimate goal is to raise awareness about the great work that
credit unions are doing around the world and give members the opportunity to
get more involved.
Here at North Winnipeg Credit Union, we plan to
celebrate Credit Union Day by having a barbeque for our members.
